I’m traveling around the Stray Asia route for the three weeks with Holly our local GM. We are on a mission to find great ‘local’ activities which travelers may want to break their journey to do – taking advantage of the flexibility of stray passes. Yesterday we found a gem. Traditional Thai boxing in a small village outside of Chiangmai. You get coached by local boxers in this almost sacred Thai activity (the gym is attached to the temple), accommodation in a local guest house and all meals. It’s the real thing with instructors who are both currently competitive fighters and some who are ex champions. You train along side the locals. It’s amazing fitness – but an even better cultural experience. We think that a three day package including transfers for an hour each way from Chiangmai will cost about $140. Check out the photos.
I should add that we also experienced the average side of Thai tourism – we are looking for a remote village to do a stay outside of Chiangmai and got taken to a ‘made for tourists’ place which was horrible – and sadly the way which many people experience Thailand. We have probably found a cool alternative though.
